Session 2: What will you do when your doctorate is done?
Date and time
Location
Barton Theatre, Level 1, JG Crawford Building 132
Lennox Crossing The Australian National University Acton, ACT 2600 AustraliaDescription
PhD to Present: a day dedicated to the career pathways of those who have gone before you
If you listen to the stories in the media, the fate awaiting you as a PhD graduate is chronic under-employment or sporadic post-doc opportunities. We all know it can be difficult to get an academic job − but what other options are available? Many people with a PhD have amazing careers that don’t fit the stereotyped notions portrayed in the media, but we hear very little about them. What are they actually doing − and how did they get there?
This event is a chance for you to learn from people who have forged a post-PhD career on their own terms. There will be individual presentations, live interviews and panel discussions with people who are working in a range of areas, including public servants, politicians, freelance consultants, digital entrepreneurs and writers. This event will be of interest to people at all stages of the PhD journey. You can come to the whole day, or just pick sessions that interest you.
Don’t miss this unique chance to listen to stories and ask questions of those who have walked the path from PhD to present before you. This is also an opportunity to meet and talk with a range of ANU research students about the big, wide world of possibilities outside the university gates.
